| My Go-To Makeup Hacks | Tips + Tricks For Easier Makeup Application! |

Since first starting my blog, my makeup skills have improved so much! I'm certainly not the best and I'm no expert at doing makeup, but when I look back at old photos of myself, I'm always so impressed by the progress I've made.

I wanted to share with you guys some makeup hacks and tricks I use pretty much every time I do my makeup. These are tricks that have helped me get so much better at doing my makeup, so I figured you might find them helpful too!

Do your eyebrows & eyeshadow first, foundation second

This is more of a preference thing, so if you prefer doing your foundation first just skip this one.

When I first started doing makeup, I always did my foundation first and this made it difficult for me if I messed up on my eyeshadow or liner, because then I'd have to take everything off or be super careful when trying to remove things. I started doing my brows and eyeshadow first and my whole makeup process has become so much easier. Now I'm fine with fall out and making a mess, because cleaning it up is so much easier!

This is my favorite tip for beginners because beginners naturally mess up, and it allows room for mistakes. If you're worried about applying the foundation after and messing your eyeshadow, liner, or eyebrows up, just invest in some good foundation brushes and you'll be good!

Carve out your brows with concealer and use that same concealer as an eye primer

Once again, carving your brows out is a preference thing, but if you want those big, bold Instagram brows, carving them out will help you out.

Just take a liner brush with some concealer and outline your brows. When you outline the bottom part of your brow, bring the concealer down onto your eyelid and use it as your eyelid primer too! It saves a little time and concealer works great as an eyeshadow primer!

Blend your eyeshadow!

This is a given but I wanted to include a few tips for blending eyeshadow in this post, because I know when I started doing makeup, blending was something I didn't put much consideration into. Blending your shadow really does make a difference.

You want to set your primer with a neutral or cream color first. Then with a light, fluffy, blending brush go in with a transition shade, usually a neutral shade a little darker than the shade you set your primer with. When you do your crease shade, take a different brush, one that's a little more dense and slowly blend the shadow into your crease, then take the fluffy blending brush and blend everything out even more. This will give your shadow a natural, evenly blended look. If you're adding other shades to your crease just repeat the process until your desired look is achieved!

Put foundation on your lips to neutralize a lip color

Sometimes a lip color doesn't look the way it's "supposed" to once applied to your lips because of your natural lip color. If you want to sort of "neutralize" the lip color so it looks more like it does in the package, just apply foundation on your lips. This gives the lip color a blank canvas and the natural pigments of your lips won't alter the color.

Make your lips appear larger by contouring

I do this every single time I do my makeup and I love how it makes my lips look. You just take a contour shade and put some right below your bottom lip and on the sides of your lips, (where they meet), and blend it out. This makes your lips appear the slightest bit fuller, so it ends up looking more natural than over-lining your lips.

Use a glitter primer/glue for glittery pressed shadows or pigments

If you own an eyeshadow palette that has a super glittery shade in it, but you're always dealing with fall-out this trick is awesome! Just take a glitter primer, I love the one from NYX, and put it on your lid or wherever you want the shadow to go and press the shadow onto it. This also works well for loose pigment eyeshadows and it's a great trick for making any shadow look more pigmented and last longer!

Carve out your lips

I've found this trick super helpful for applying darker lip shades, (since I suck so much at using dark lipsticks). Before you apply foundation, put your lip color on and carve out your lips with concealer. This hides any of the lipstick that may have bled, since dark or bolder shades tend to bleed a lot, then just do the rest of your makeup!

This is a little trickier because then you have to work around the lipstick, but I only do this when I'm using darker shades and it's made it so much easier for me to rock those vampy fall shades!

Those are a few of my go-to tricks when doing my makeup!

I'm so happy I've fallen in love with doing makeup. Makeup is so much fun because not only is it a chance to be super creative, it's also a constant learning experience. I'm constantly being challenged by it and I love challenges.

What are some of your favorite tricks/hacks/tips for doing makeup? I'm always looking for new ways to improve my skills! Let me know in the comments what tricks have helped you step your makeup game up!

  2. It's funny, I always used to apply my eye makeup first but now I'm doing foundation first lol. I like the carving out your brows with concealer tip and I also like mixing foundations but I guess that depends on what you're trying to do. Right now one I have it too matte (and kinda light) and my other is too dewey so it works. I love makeup and how creative you can get with it and how you can always learn something new! I love seeing what other people do too, lots of great ideas! Xx Jen beautylifemom.com

  3. I think it's called makeup because sometimes in order to achieve your look, you have to make it up as you go along. That's the fun of it! As long as you make it work.

  5. Depending on the eye look I'm going for, I put eyeshadow on before my foundation but not my eyebrows. I'm always scared that I'm going to mess it up with my foundation. These are all great tips Ali!

    1. It is a little scary doing the brows, but I can't do my eyes without doing my brows first so I just learned to apply the foundation very carefully in that area!
